The NBCA Mission and Methods

bwstatue.jpg (9510 bytes)National Black College Alliance is an organization of college students and alumni from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The NBCA is dedicated to increasing the awareness of HBCUs to high school students in urban cities across the nation. The organization also recognizes the outstanding contributions HBCUs and their alumni have made to shape American society. The Alliance provides resources for HBCUs through volunteering, mentoring, and supporting philanthropic efforts. To this end, the NBCA creates an atmosphere where high school students, college students, alumni, and adults can experience educational and personal growth. In addition, the organization encourages volunteerism and philanthropy from alumni, college students, individuals, corporations, government, and foundations to become active in creating a new generation of civic leaders.

History of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America
Since its inception, historically black colleges and universities have stood poised as a catalyst for educational opportunity for generations of African Americans. These institutions were born of the belief that post Civil War black freedmen should be immediately educated. One hundred and five institutions, which were created for this purpose, remain intact today. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were founded for African Americans. These were designed as centers for intellectual leadership and knowledge necessary to strengthen the black community towards the adjustment to new levels of competition and equality.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities have helped Black students realize their fullest potential by providing them a wealth of resources including self-esteem, self-awareness, pride, motivation, academic stimulation, and leadership skills. This type of training prepares these students to compete effectively in the world job market. HBCUs are three percent of America’s colleges and universities-enroll less than 20% of African American undergraduates, but award one-third of all bachelor’s degrees and a significant number of advanced degrees earned by African Americans.

Our NBCA Strategic Vison

The members (alumni, college students and friends) of National Black College Alliance believe that America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities are national treasures. Their learning environments are characterized by unparalleled richness, relevance and diversity that can make a tremendous difference in the America of tomorrow. The NBCA is developing programs to continue to support HBCUs, as well as our urban communities.
